VVVVVV Chess
« on: 16 Aug 2014, 21:59 (7 years and 3 months ago) »
There are six characters in VVVVVV, and six kinds of pieces in chess.
Do they match up?

My version:

 :victoria: - King
Victoria is too scared, and doesn't like exploring.
However, she becomes important in the end, as she shows you where the trinkets are,
helping you open up the secret lab.

 :violet: - Queen
She helps Viridian the most, helping you return to the ship and finding the teleporters.

 :vermilion: - Rook
The big guys, right?

 :vitellary: - Bishop
Again, the smart guys.

 :verdigris: - Knight
Movement differs from other characters/pieces. Also, jumping.

 :viridian: - Pawn
Expendable lives. Also is needed to run across the dimension/board.
Plus, in the end, the pawn helps the team win by getting promoted to queen,
while Viridian helps the team escape by turning off the stabilizer.

why'd you quote his post

It's a bit hard to notice at first, but he striked through something and added a sentence.

then shouldn't he say 'it's flipping, not jumping' instead? and if not, then shouldn't he at least quote only a part of it?

I didn't know that! What is it referring to?

Quote from: rhebus from distractionware
Here are some more 8-bit references:
Manic Mine: Manic Miner for the ZX Spectrum [although I think the Yes Men is the most similar room to MM in the game]
It's a Secret to Nobody: Secrets in Legend of Zelda on the NES were marked with "It's a secret to everybody".
Sweeney's Maze: ZZT by Tim Sweeney of Epic Megagames (now famous for Unreal). The monsters here are centipedes from ZZT.
Twisty Little Passages: Zork/Adventure type games

And non-gaming references:
Silverstone Grand V: Silverstone is the usual track for the British F1 Grand Prix
Take the Red Pill: The Matrix
Ascending and Descending: MC Escher picture of the same name
It's not easy being green: Kermit the Frog!  :verdigris:
Green Dudes can't Flip: White men can't jump
Murdering Twinmaker: The Fly

and that's only from two levels  :vitellary: anyone want to do some of the rest of the game?

Also, I like the music track that you get in the Tower in Flip Mode  :viridian: Spoiler: It's in the jukebox as ercoF evitisoP

and i thought making a custom vvvvvv level chock-full of obscure references was original and hadn't been done before.

My version:
 :viridian: :King
The most important in the game.
 :cviolet: :Queen
 :vermilion: :Pawn
Sometimes is very good, other times is useless. More often useless than not.
 :cvermilion_sad:
 :vitellary: :Bishop
 :victoria: :Rook
Just because no one else of the original D.S.S. crew fits.

Sorry for bumping (even though I see nothing wrong with it).

But I just saw this post, and it looks like one of the most amazing ideas I've ever seen on here.

But I don't like the derogatory comments made against Verdigris. Seriously, why does everybody hate him? And I take "movement differs from other pieces" as saying that he can't flip. I do not get that AT ALL.

Anyway, the only way I can see to actually make this happen is to make a bunch of Papercraft figures. It was hard enough making one Viridian, and making thirty-two characters will be torture. But it'll be worth it.

And here's another thing to think about: there are two different factions in chess: the white and black pieces. Which means that we can't very well have all the same characters for both sides, can we? But InfoTeddy said this somewhere in this post...

they match up pretty well

now to do :cverisix::cviel::cvaelyn::cvoon:, vita, and vanilla

...so now we have to come up with positions for them as well. I can't think of anything beyond Voon, who is the only orange crewmate Viridian's ever seen, which means he'd be a knight since knight movements are unique.

And InfoTeddy forgot  :cvalso_angrystare:

We don't really have much experience with the tOLP villis to guess where their positionals would be.

No, I mean, we know everything about the villis from Dimension Open, which is like hardly any interaction since most of the time you go around trying to complete hard rooms in that level. We don't know much about the villis yet.
