Level File Malformed: Metadata is Missing or Corrupt
« on: 29 Dec 2017, 14:17 (5 years and 8 months ago) »
I tried to open up one of my levels one day when I decided to get back to developing stuff, only to give me the above error.
None of my other levels that were saved in my levels folder gave that error, not even a level I made before working on Dimension Whatever.
Insight/help for this little conundrum would be nice.

What is the size of the file? Do you remember last saving it in VVVVVV or Ved?

(If you ever saved it in Ved in a version released in September or later, it will have made backups, just in case the level file is unusable and you have nothing else to recover from)

Filesize: 1.27 MB
Last place saved: Ved (using a version before the backups because I forget to check stuff sometimes whoops)

Could you send me the level file so I can see what's wrong?

The level attached top the zip file below.
Sorry about the long reply delay, I was busy doing a lot of other things, and I proceeded to forget about the forum post for a while.

Bad news: that level file is 1.3 megabytes of air!

Something caused every byte in that file to become null. Not sure what to suspect. If Ved or VVVVVV were to have a file saving bug this catastrophic in a certain condition, if anything it'd save a file 0 bytes long, not a file filled with NUL bytes. If it were your harddisk, and this would have been a first sign of trouble 2.5 months ago, then I think it'd be a bit strange if nothing happened ever since (unless you didn't use the computer). But I'm not an expert on hard drives. Other than that, I can only conjure theories whatever caused it (some obscure OS bug? Malware? Power loss while saving?)

Do you know if this happened to any other files?

The error started happening when the system restarted on me while I was making either the Space Station 2 section, or improving the Outside sections.
All the other levels I had are fine, oddly enough.
Well, at least now I'm kinda glad I uploaded the file while it still actually had data in it!

The upcoming 1.8.2 should prevent levels possibly becoming nulled when there's a sudden shutdown, so I'm marking this topic solved!
